Released in 1998 as part of the album No Time to Chill, "How Much Is the Fish?" became one of Scooter's signature tracks — and one of the most gloriously absurd titles in music history.
The track reached #1 in multiple European countries and became a permanent fixture in Scooter's live sets. It's the song that turns a concert into a rave, a rave into a riot, and a riot into pure euphoria.
The story behind the song
What does the title mean? H.P. Baxxter himself has given various explanations over the years, none of them entirely serious. The most commonly cited origin is that it was a phrase overheard at a fish market — but knowing Baxxter's sense of humor, the real answer is probably: it means nothing, and that's the point.
The song's structure is classic late-90s Scooter: pounding kick drums, a euphoric synth melody, Baxxter's shouted vocals, and a chorus that thousands of people can scream along to without knowing a single word of German.
The production was handled by Rick J. Jordan and Jens Thele, who layered the track with enough energy to power a small city.
